Thinking About the Future..

My aim when I leave University is to build my own freelance photography business which will specialise in wedding and portrait photography.  I have already had my own little business running along side my studies for my degree which I have used to gain my own experience and has already given me opportunity to work with different clients including, wedding photography, family portraits and dog photography,However my goal is to really expand and grow my business into a success. I will be hoping to build my business in my home town of Chesterfield.

There are many ways I feel I can begin learning and begin growing my knowledge and experience towards the success of beginning to grow a client base while still at university. I feel that I am in a good situation to really begin looking around out other freelance photographers, attend talks, get portfolio reviews on my current portfolio and get work experience days with successful freelance photographers.

Thinking About the Future..

A Day With Chique Photography & Makeover Studios

Over the Christmas break I was lucky to have been accepted for an opportunity to a work experience day with Chique Photography & Makeover Studios. The business is run by 2 women 1 a former Huddersfield University photography student, and the other a former fashion student specialising in hair and make up. The two founded the business seven years ago and have now managed to expand there business into three successful photography studios in Huddersfield, Wakefield and Sheffield.

Chique Photography & Makeover Studios specialise in different varieties of portrait photography some packages they offer are vintage, couples, boudoir & best friends makeovers, children’s & family photo shoots to hen party and mother & daughter pamper days.  The main feature that is different to other studios is the in house hair and make up team who give the clients a make over before having there photographs taken, which I feel makes the brand stand out from other studios.

Due to the growth of the company I also wanted to explore what it is like working for as bigger company rather than a freelance photographer like I had done previous. I spent the day in there studio in Wakefield which has a great location at wakefield kirkgate train station meaning the studio is easy accessible to clients from different parts of wakefield and further.

During my day at the studio I had asked to get some experience working alongside the digital re-toucher, as I had done previous work like this with my previous placement with Amie Parsons Photography I felt it would be worthwhile gaining experience at a different studio.

Spending the day with Rachel the digital retoucher instantly made me aware of the differences I had in my previous placement. The studio was booked up all day back to back with clients which made timing at this studio an important consideration when it came to the editing process. Editing of images was set at 30 seconds per image, this was due to the client being able to view there images instantly after shoot. The studio has a policy of not letting the client see the images unedited. This was a big change for me as in previous work timing had never really been thought of, as clients were invited back a week or so after to view images so I was given as much time necessary to ensure to images were edited to the best possible standard. Although different to what I was used to, there system does work, the idea is that the client are in the moment and don’t just buy the images because they like the photo but also to add the experience.

Although many editing techniques that I was shown are similar to ones I have used before at chrique they like to offer something different to the clients by giving the images different looks using overlays. They also add quotes on some of the images that stand out to add something different to the images. Here is an example:

All of my experiences in studios have all been so different due to no studio being run the same. I find it so interesting and valuable to be doing bits of work experience even for just a day, within portrait and wedding photography, as this is what I want to pursue my career in post degree gaining as much as experience as possible now will be of great importance to me when I either set up on my own as freelance or work for a studio or company.

LinkedIn Workshop

Today I attended a LinkedIn workshop which involved expanding my knowledge with the site enabling me to be able to use all of the sites features and giving me a professional presence online that I am happy with.

I already had a LinkedIn profile which I felt pretty confident with using, however the workshop was still very useful as I was taught how to do job searches from the programme, which is probably the most important feature that I didn’t know about properly. I also wasn’t aware that you could apply for jobs actually using your LinkedIn profile, which is quick and helpful but also showed me the importance of keeping my profile up to date.
